“Nothing is ever really, truly destroyed, but rather undergoes the illusion of destruction.” Andrew K. Currey describes the basic principal of his photo-surrealist drawings: destruction as a form of creation -- whether that destruction is of the mind or body.
“By depicting destroyed subjects I am allowing the subject to live again through the piece. The use of double entendre and non-sequiturs for the titles helps the viewer to see deeper into the work and able to come to various meanings.”
The stark white background of the paper is used as a reserve, or blank space from which the image emerges making the background perceptually present but conceptually absent. There is neither a horizon line nor a reference point in the drawings, giving each piece a quiet sense of loneliness, and timelessness.
Andrew K. Currey was born in Pueblo, Colorado and received his Bachelors in Fine Art from the University of North Texas. His work has been showcased most recently at the Craighead Green Gallery (Dallas, TX) and a solo exhibit in 2011 at 1111 Studio Gallery (Dallas, TX) titled “New Alchemy.” Andrew K. Currey is also the co-founder of the North Texas Painting and Drawing Association (P.D.A.). He currently lives and works in the Fort Worth area.
